The Uncommon Scents® Aromatherapy Practitioner Certificate Program is an in-depth course covering one of today's fastest growing complementary therapies. The Training is suitable for those interested in acquiring a deeper understanding of aromatherapy with a view to pursuing a full or part-time career as a Registered Aromatherapist. When taken together, Modules One and Two comprising the Aromatherapy Practitioner Certificate Program will provide the basic knowledge to use aromatherapy successfully at home or in a retail, spa or clinical setting. Each module thoroughly prepares the student for more advanced training in aromatherapy & other holistic therapies. The Uncommon Scents Aromatherapy Practitioner Certificate Program is based on the core curriculum of the BC Alliance of Aromatherapy, complies with the guidelines of the British Columbia Association of Practising Aromatherapists and the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy, and may entitle a graduate to qualify for the title of Registered Aromatherapist (R.A.). Modules One and Two provide the most up-to-date information on aromatherapy use at home or in a store or clinical setting. Each Module consists of:

  • 8 weeks of Live Training
  • Consultation Role Play, Tutorials & Student Clinic
  • Practicum Experience & Case Studies
  • Written Examination for Module 1 and Practical Examination for Module 2
  • Student Labs & Monthly Learning Circles
  • Home Study Assignments, Research, Reports & Final Paper
  • Community Outreach

for a total of approximately 300+ hours each.

A Certificate of Completion of Aromatherapy Studies for each Module will be issued to students who have successfully completed all requirements with a final grade over 75%; Honours: over 95%.

MODULE 1: ESSENTIAL OIL STUDIES
PRE-REQUISITE: THE AROMATHERAPY FOUNDATION CERTIFICATE PROGRAM OR EQUIVALENT

Live Training:  The Practioner Program training will not be offered in Autumn 2005.  Check back to this website for updates for Spring 2006.

Part-Time Studies: Part-time students will be accepted into the Program as space permits and must complete the entire program within 3 years from the date of Program commencement.

This training focuses on the history, distillation, therapeutic applications and safety issues of aromatherapy today. In-depth hands-on study of 60 essential oils, blending, consultation techniques & code of ethics for aromatherapists. A perfect introduction for retailers or those wanting to pursue a consultative practice.

MODULE 2: AROMATHERAPY BODYWORK TRAINING
PRE-REQUISITE: MODULE 1 OR EQUIVALENT

It is strongly recommended that prior to enrolling, students complete an Aromatherapy Massage Course and book an aromatherapy massage treatment with the instructor or a graduate/student of the Program.

Building upon Module 1, several forms of bodywork are combined in a relaxing aromatherapy treatment. Techniques include Swedish massage, lymphatic drainage & energy healing. Emphasis on choosing appropriate essences, safety issues & contraindications. A good foundation for those without prior bodywork experience or those wanting to combine consultation with hands-on treatment.

The entire 18-week Full-time Program is offered once each year in February, with a selection of classes offered in the Fall for Part-time students. Full-time students may be eligible for Student Funding and should enquire with Vancouver Training Institute. Part-time students will be accepted into the Program as space permits and must complete the entire program within 3 years from the date of Program commencement. Classes are scheduled Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm and Thursdays from 9:00 am to 11:00 am with a few exceptions.

ADDITIONAL STUDENT INFORMATION
ATTENDANCE: Attendance at all live-training classes is mandatory unless prior written approval from the instructor is obtained.

A list of additional reference books & publications will be provided in class for each component.

Supplies

Most aromatherapy supplies are included during the live training modules.  Purchase of aromatherapy supplies will be required to complete the Consultation Role Play and Practicum components. These include but are not limited to essential oils, carriers, & bottles. Students will receive guidance and advice on suggested supplies required. Supplies can be purchased from outside sources or aromatherapy supplies are available from the instructor at a 15% discount for the duration of the course..

Equipment

MODULE 1: ESSENTIAL OIL STUDIES
For the Live Training, notepaper, pens & highlighters and a footbath/basin are required. Optional Electric Diffusor, Aroma Inhalers and Facial Sauna Unit are suggested.

EQUIPMENT: MODULE 2: AROMATHERAPY BODYWORK
A Massage Table with two sheets, two blankets, two pillows and a large towel are required for the Live Training & Practicum. Students without a Massage Table may be able to share with a fellow student and should contact the instructor prior to start of class.

Additional Requirements

  • Level 1 CPR and First Aid: Training is strongly recommended for both students of both Modules. Certificate is required in order to practise aromatherapy within BC.
